"for example ambient micing vs. multi-micing, minimal post-processing vs. heavy compression, etc"
Oh they had some of that already with tube compressors and consoles but of course with all the newer processors its all done digitally anyway.
"I was thinking primarily of '70s rock. Many albums that consistently earn 5-star sonic ratings were recorded at a time when tube gear and discrete circuits were considered relics and "state of the art" meant PCB's, op-amps, etc.
"
I know very few that qualify as "reference" recordings from this era, sonically that is. The best ones I can think of are Donald Fagen "The Nightfly", Steely Dan "Aja" and Dire Straits "Dire Straits". There are other good ones but hardly reference quality like Supertramp "Crime of the Century" and maybe Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon". Also, I don't know if all of these were recorded with tube or transistors as there is no information whatsoever on the albums themselves.
