Hmm. Seems to be a reasonable hypotheseis. While class AB seems to be the norm for SS there are no laws against running a transistor amp single ended. I have often wondered why this approach isn't more popular.

"With the tube amp maybe they are listening in near field or are content to listen a lower volume because the sound is cleaner."

My personal experience is that with cleaner sound my volume levels trend up not down, but maybe I'm wierd. I think you'd be forced to listen nearfield on some of these systems listed in inmate systems in order to hear anything at all.
