My dictionary has two definitions for subliminal. The first one is "Below the threshold of conscious perception. Used of stimuli." The second one is "Inadequate to produce conscious awareness but able to evoke a response: subliminal propaganda." I was using the first definition, but in retrospect it was not the best word to have chosen.

I agree with you that the mixing of various types of distortion can have complex implications, both in the equipment and in the ear. I am not a fan of any distortion, even when created intentionally by musicians and especially within my own ears due to excessive loudness, so I haven't given this subject much thought. However, if there is to be distortion I would rather it be low order and not high order. In this light I can tolerate mediocre loudspeakers, but find mediocre amplifiers fatiguing.
