RE: A matter of taste? It sure seems that way.

"I'll take mine raw."

I think it really depends on the source material whether much post processing is a good idea or not. For example I can see where the valid argument for a tiny processing footprint might be made for unamplified instrumentals and when the goal is truly honest realism. It seems that studio recordings using electronically altered instrument sounds and human vocals can be enhanced rather nicely by my experience and the lines get a bit blurrier in these cases. Don't get me wrong, I think minimal processing is the best approach but it is often necessary for some processing to achieve the artists vision IMO. The question becomes, what is better the artists vision or reality. In many many cases I would choose the vision over reality.

I'll try to make an illustrative example. Anyone familiar with the rock/metal band Queensryche is familiar with the somewhat unusually accomplished vocal stylings the band is famous for. Geoff Tate is quite an accomplished, even classicaly trained, rock vocalist who is generally given much respect by his peers. Having seen the band perform live on occasion I am familiar with how the incredible perfection attained using studio techniques is difficult if not impossible to reproduce live. Put it this way, I believe that if not even Geoff can do it perfectly then good luck to 99.999% of the rest of the rock world. In other words rock fans really probably do not want to hear raw cuts of their favorite stars. I suspect this would be true of the other genres as well at least to some extent.

If interested I recomend the studio versions of songs like "Lady Wore Black", or "Queen of the Ryche" to illustrate apparent studio perfection. Any of the live versions of these songs I've heard pale in comparison and I'd even hesitate to recomend them other than for this type of comparison.
