RE: 3 channels worked well

I agree Tony, the three microphone system sounds good. I bet the center Mic. was largely time-aligned with the other two.

I have a fair collection of the CD releases of the Mercurys and now really enjoy them. A couple of years ago I happened to hook up my older DVD player to an unused input on my DAC and discovered that some CD's sounded a lot better playing through it than through my normal transport, especially the Mercury's. I was so unhappy with them that I was considering selling them for pennys/dollar to recover the shelf room and now I wouldn't part with them as I can hear the orchestra spread out in a very convincing, 3D manner.

I wasn't a Dolby fan preferring the tape hiss to the compression artifacts. I also recognize that a fair amount of both studio and reproduction gear was not well implemented due to an incomplete understanding of the factors that affect the sound and that we are not totally out of that ditch yet.

However... by and large I think that we now have the most capable recording and playback systems that we've ever had so this really should be a golden era. And from some of the results I've heard, it is. If only it were more widespread...

Regards, Rick
