You can compare a component with itself and still get 50% of the audiophiles, or even 75%, to say they hear a difference!
With sighted auditions it's a big struggle to get "null results" when comparing a component with itself!
You are SO concerned about subtle effects not always audible?
-- But when was the last time you've heard an audiophile say "sometimes I hear a slight difference and sometimes they sound the same"? during a sighted audition? Pretty rare in real life.
If one arbitrarily assumed half the blind tests with null results had missed real subtle differences, for any reason, then blind test results would STILL be FAR from the 'everything sounds different' myth common during subjective auditions.
You are so confused about the use of tests to study audiophile behavior, that may apply to other audiophiles who did nlt participate in the test, that I believe it would be hopeless to edumacate you.
The sad fact is that audiophiles can not demonstrate hearing skills anywhere close to the fabled golden ear claims implied by behaviors in sighted auditions, and exhibited in journal component reviews.
That makes the hobby a laughingstock subject to uncontested ridiculous claims and snake oil products (Tice clock, magic pebbles, intelligent chips, brilliant foo foo dust, etc.) when viewed by casual outside observers.
More important: False beliefs that everything sounds different steers R&D money away from real audible differences that could benefit everyone.
