Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

It depends on the purpose of the audition.

Who said jj is the ultimate expert? His field is psychometrics and he has adminstered lots of DBTs. He is a Fellow of both the AES and the IEEE. This is pretty basic stuff. Why shouldn't I take his word for it?

If you want a real "a time-and-place specific parlour trick" it's sighted auditioning. At least with a DBT, one might establish to a degree of probability that one can detect a difference. Without measurements and calibration, one would not be able to establish just what the audible differences were in technical terms. But whether that is required depends on the purpose of the auditions.
