Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

I think making measurements or studying measurements made by others before an audition may be a mistake

Just like reading a positive review before an audition can bias your conclusions, doing measurements or reading measurements could bias your conclusions too.

I used to read the speaker reviews in Stereophile as a general guide to what speakers are worth an audition.

Sometimes the fact that I thought the treble would be too bright, based on the measurements in Stereophile, caused me to listen for a treble problem that I expected to hear ... when I should have been listening to the music, not the treble.

As a result (at least when I used to subscribe) I looked ONLY at the Step Response in the Stereophile speaker measurements to judge whether a speaker was worth an audition. I didn't look at the frequency response chart or read the review like I used to do -- just one glance at the step response chart and off to the audio store. And even that one glance could bias my evaluation of the speakers!
