The original post claimed that if measurements demonstrated a difference but DBT participants failed to hear one it would indicate that DBT is flawed. The purpose of my post was to demonstrate how absurd that idea is.

The issue you're bringing up is very different - how to use measurements to characterize what we DO hear. I certainly agree that it's extremely difficult, or rather impossible, to perform any measurement that will predict a given listener's response in every situation, because the listener is influenced by all sorts of factors having nothing to do with intrinsic sound quality which we can't measure and in fact don't have a clue about.

However, as tlyyra is pointing out, under strictly controlled circumstances, where the listener's response is influenced by as little as possible other than the sound, it's not actually that difficult.
