Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Haven't giants like Polk, Bose and Wilson been using listening as a criteria for years?

"Maybe using the ear as the final arbitrator isn't such a bad idea afterall?"

Most audiophiles should use their ears as the final arbitrator when deciding on which components they purchase for their home rig.

If they decided to use measurements and active equalization they may end up better hearing what is on the recording when seated in their listening position. But what is that going to be? Well measured near the speakers or even at the listening position (with active eq) it should be exactly what is on each channel of the recording. We rarely if ever know what that is and it varies almost infinitely from recording to recording. If someone wants it this way they can certainly have it this way.

Others believe they have special hearing abilities that allow them to decide what is the most realistic reproduction. That's ludicrious! First even given recordings where one is intimately familiar with the musician and the venue how does one actually know what is captured on the recording? Clearly one can know how only very few recordings (relateive to the number of recordings ) are supposed to sound but there is no way to know how they actually sound independent of a playback system. Ie. there's now way to know if the recording is actually compensating for playback environment or if the playback environment is actually compensating for recording deficiency.

It's actually silly to think the subjectivist is capable of making valid determinations of realism on anything more than a small handfull of recordings. How credible these observations is my first reservation and how applicable they are to building a system that allows a listener to hear the intentions on a wide range of recording/musical styles is my second reservation.

Only because stereo is mostly ill-defined and insuffient to support realistic reproduction I can say -

"Maybe using the ear as the final arbitrator isn't such a bad idea afterall?"

and keep a straight face when saying it.

Needless to say I for one am not anxiously awaiting your and/or salesman Linkwitzs' next epiphany.

Give me rhythm or give me death!
