RE: Say what Tom?

Hi AJ

“Dr. Toole: "A certain amount of the right kind of reflected sound appears to enhance the music listening experience and, interestingly enough, to improve speech intelligibility"

What research are you basing your opinion on? Is it recent and available for me to read?

I don’t know about reading on line but the sound engineering classes are open to “hifi” folks too.
I have attended probably dozen of these over the last 20 years and taught part of one about 10 years ago under Don and Carolyn Davis.
There are other classes but Synaudcon is probably the most well known.

Dr. Toole is or at least was a guy that worked for Harmon up in Canada whose area of interest was home stereo not commercial sound.
He had (if I recall) proposed that room interactions were the last obstacle to overcome and that constant directivity speakers were what the average listener preferred in his testing.

“Have I mentioned that I prefer using coincident coaxial with the dipole/cardioid/monopole format because of the polar response you mentioned?”

No, but I am not surprised.
Coaxial drivers have the potential to avoid the self interference at crossover, even if not aligned in time (some are not) at least what they do is symmetric.
I have noticed that in spite of good on axis measurements, one can often hear / identify the physical location of the speaker from this self interference fwiw.

I agree about the bass part although I wouldn’t say “box sound” but rather a formerly flat system is altered by the room modes. On the other hand, if one like the feeling of low frequency sound (say below 30 Hz) then the dipole becomes monumentally inefficient.
Best,
Tom
