Note that Holt said trained listeners. Also note that most of consumer testing, to the best of my knowledge, has been using an ABX with untrained listeners.
To further the point, the listeners will need to be trained what to listen for, for each specific test.
Well, that's how I interpret jj when he has talked about this, and given his expertise in this matter I'm not about to argue with it.
