Wow! You actually talked to him!

I only met him once, at an audio show in NYC. Ever since, he won't talk to me on the phone;his wife does all the talking. And I'm a subscriber to his site!

I scanned an old issue, and it didn't take long to find perhaps a medium lie:

Lie #12) Jitter measurements taken inside digital equipment are useful for predicting performance. For example, Robert Harley's jitter measurements were great predictors of DAC sound quality.

This would be true, except that different DAC architectures produce very different noise and distortion spectra when jitter is present. I quote the article by Robert Adams," It is recommended that jitter measurements of internal clock signals be used by equipment designers as an aid to achieving good signal quality, but that reviewers should not attempt to assess signal quality based on jitter measurements, since the amount of signal degradation caused by jitter is a complex combination of many design factors. It is better to measure the analog output signal itself, as this is what is ultimately reproduced."

If you're really interested in Aczel's opinions, buy the back issue package and read them.
