I once lived in a small city with a regional orchestra and a young conductor. He programmed concerts to typically start with a loud, brassy, atonal, and mercifully brief work. I found myself listening more closely to the sounds of the instruments when the 'real' music came along. Of course, he was not trying to achieve analytical listening, but I found this to be the case, at least for me.
It might help to have some reasonably loud and unfamiliar music as a stretching exercise before the session started.
