HowdyAgain let me say that choosing for oneself is quite a bit different that trying to prove a difference to a third party.
In addition to what JCA says:
When I choose components, I audition them at shows, in stores, etc. and if I hear something I like I'll listen with my own music and a system that is as familiar as possible. If I still like it I'll try to arrange for a listen at my house. There I ususally do some quick A/B testing, sometimes blind with my daughter. But I also just try it for a while and see what happens. A number of times I liked something for a while and then a favorite disc plays that just sounds horrible. Then I A/B with the original component to see if I'm fooling myself...
Anyway you get the idea. What ever works for you when you are selecting is probably what's best for you. As time goes on you'll develop a set of discs that highlight the things you care about.
