RE: Proper solutions are not always available or practical

Well, I guess I'm lucky because I live in a small house that's so old it had the "post and loom" type of two conductor wiring, so I had an incentive to tear it out and upgrade to a NEC-compliant system. The house is single wall, like most houses in Hawaii, so there was no drywall, firestopping etc. to deal with.

I simply replaced the attic wiring with Romex, got a friend to do a bit of conduit work outside, sank a 10 foot 3/4" copper rod into the earth for an earth ground (the ocean's about 7 feet below ground here), ran the cable runs out of the attic next to the breaker box and connected them to separate breakers, and ended up with four separate, grounded 20-amp circuits in the living room (most with GFI outlets, even though code doesn't require them). Now I have separate circuits for the stereo, the AV system and all computers, servers, NAS boxes, etc. (The earth grounds are entirely separate from the AC ground, of course, as code does not permit earth ground only, and GFIs won't work with them.)

Did it make a difference? Probably; it should, but I was too busy sweating in the attic to arrange an A/B test. At least the house meets code now.
