Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

"I don't wish to "convert" any of the non-believers, just educate them on the errors of their ways"....How quaint.

TB54 - I'd be willing to bet you never knew an SET amp in the right system, could produce less distortion than a solid state amp could!

I'd be willing to bet that you don't know that one of those silly little underpowered coloration/distortion makers would have no place in *my* system, the only "right" one that matters.
Every one of those SET pieces of junk that I have heard have sounded awful. Just don't ask their owners. Their feeble, clock radio output requires ridiculous compromises in speaker design. No thanks. The 40 or so watts of your Mastersound *might* hack it for my tweeter or super tweeter amps in a pinch. Use for a 84db avg sensitivity speaker would be an absurdity I would not consider.
If any of the thousands of real, acoustic instruments at the hundreds of music performances that I have attended sounded anything like a SET amplifier, I would either have left or got up on stage and smashed it.
Some people seem to not be bothered at amplified music events by the distorted sound of underpowered amplifiers clipping. This must be the SET crowd. To each their own I suppose.

TB54 - I specifically hope you'll never embrace SETs

Better to never say never. If someone managed to make a SET that lacked euphonic colorations (that you can't hear through your lower resolution, lossy, floppy Poly speakers) I would consider embracing it - as a headphone amplifier.
The best tube amplifiers I have heard "sound" just like their solid state counterparts, neutral and powerful. It's just that they cost a bunch more and are unreliable. Plus I'm not much for romantisizing relics from a bygone era.
Ok, well maybe except a '62 250 GTO.

cheers,

AJ
