Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

The words fit pretty well. Thanks.

Yes, the impedance requirements are what I'm talking about. thetubeguy1954's profile makes the comparison of his speakers with Sonus Faber. I've not heard his speakers, but I did have the recent experience with Sonus Fabers that I described. My friend has searched for several years for a tube amp that would reveal the music through his Sonus Fabers. He is a well-to-do architect and the pile of idle top-dollar tube amps he showed me made me cringe.

There are some speakers, such as Magnepans and the Sonus Fabers, that need lots of clean power with very low output impedance in the amps. They sound pretty with some styles of music when driven by linear tube amps, but they do not come fully to life until they are driven by something like the Gilmore Audio Raptors.

There are other speakers designed specifically for tube amps, such as the Horning Alkabiades, that need a higher output impedance in the amp to achieve optimum damping. Amps like the Raptors make these speakers sound reserved or dull. Amps like the better SET examples or exotic push-pull designs make them come to life.

Impedance matching seems simple, but it has profound implications for refined audio systems. It makes the difference between satisfying and unsatisfying sound.
