Re: It's better to travel in hope ....

Ahhh, I see that without labels, our ears can make the decision
for us.

Depends on the decision you're trying to make. If you're trying to decide what sounds best to you, then I can't think of anything but our ear/brain system with which to ultimately make such a decision. That's what I use and don't care about any objective specs or measurements.

If you're trying to decide whether different audio circuits produce actual audible differences, then our ear/brain system on its own is of more and more limited use as the actual differences become smaller and smaller.

The problem is when we try to impose our beliefs on others?

Not quite sure what you mean here. What beliefs are you referring to?

But surely there is a direction we are all headed. Prior to '92,
I thought all CDs sounded like heck. Would you agree this is
the case?

Dunno if I agree or not, not knowing just what the direction is you're speaking of.

How did the Steve amp come into being?

It began as a purely whimsical exercise. It was inspired by Nelson Pass' "Zen" series articles. I wondered what sort of amp I'd design if I used a bit more developed "eastern philosophy" to guide it rather than the singular obsession with absolute simplicity that guided the various Zen projects.

So I came up with three basic guiding principles which were compliment (which recognizes the complimentary nature of things), balance (which recognizes that harmony is achieved by a balance of compliments), and nature (which recognizes that it's better to work with the nature of a thing rather than against it).

That's pretty much it in a nutshell.
