Re: It's better to travel in hope ....

Hi,

Around '92 I got the State 'o the Art D/A. Lots of good reviews,
etc. It sounded great to me as well.

About 7 yrs later, all the reviews said "Oh, the new version is
so much better. Everyone should upgrade". This was unanimous amongst
all the reviews I read. So I did.

My perception from all of this would have pointed to much better
sound from the upgrade. It cost me a significant amount of money to
do the upgrade.

Anyway, the upgrade arrived...Listened to it with extremely hi
expectations and...the sound was so audiophile like and laid back,
I thought it sounded terrible. I checked the reviews, and sure
enough, they all mentioned this was what the upgrade did to the
sound and that this was "better".

So I actually went out on the Internet and found an old unit for
sale, and bought it used. This also cost me some bucks. Anyway, once
I got the old unit, I enjoyed the sound again.

All of this at considerable cost in time, money, and hassle.

What's the moral of this story: I think it is to let your own ears
be the guide. Also though, if I would have ignored my own ears, my
strong inclination would have been to prefer the upgraded unit. So
I think your argument against 2) and 3) is a little weak (at least
from my own experience).
