Good question. Here are some assumptions.1) Ear/Brain is incredibly discerning, probably the greatest
measurement tool there is.That's not quite true, given that we can rather trivially measure that which is beyond the ear/brain's ability to perceive.
Certainly the ear/brain system is pretty amazing in a purely biological sense, but in other ways it's actually rather mediocre, and because of the brain's involvement and all of the psychology that goes along with it, it's not always entirely reliable.
2) Changes I made to my system were based on no commercial interest, and no axe to grind (except that I didn't have that much money).
There needn't be any commercial interest or axe to grind. Simply knowing the identity of what it is you're listening to can influence subjective perception.
3) I can't be that crazy, especially when changes to my system
are so darn repeatable.Has nothing to do with being crazy. And I don't know why people keep resorting to such a gross mischaracterization as this.
It simply has to do with being human and being human means that our subjective perceptions can be influenced by things other than actual physical stimulus.
and probably the bigger...
4) There is an underlying cause for everything. This is one thing
that makes Science fun...learning what the causes are.Sure. But in instances where there can be more than one plausible cause, until the other plausible causes are eliminated, you're left with ambiguity. And where there is ambiguity, there is a lack of certainty and you're left not really knowing what the actual cause or causes are.
What I'm saying is that when we get down to such low levels as this, the more plausible the influence of subjective bias becomes and the greater the need to rule it out before going further. At least if you want to avoid ending up chasing your own tail.
