Most of these methods routinely turn up in JAES, but the hard-core theory behind multitone testing shows up in IEEE transactions. It begins about 1967, with (esp) Narayanan at Bell Labs (BSTJ May-Jun 1967). His work led to the use of Gaussian inputs and Volterra-Wiener series to map out the residue. Wiener started the whole thing, in a sense, with his Brownian motion paper. Volterra (unwittingly) provided the analytic tool: functionals.
