Re: test for transients

Testing with a square wave will give you IM and (TIM) as well as phase shift stuff. Yes, you and some others are decades behind, but don't let that stop you from learning more. It might be possible, as you said to get the EXACT subtraction of the fundamental with a computer program, that you can do a pure square wave test. However, no real world measurements would be very effective at doing this, to the best of my knowledge.
A triangle wave closer emulates a sine wave and somewhat emulates the conditions for SMPTE IM. It is in our paper. This is only useful with high feedback, low slew-rate systems.
I only hope to get you up to speed, and not to get yourself into a confusing situation, where you will have everybody and his/her brother interpreting your results in different ways. Trust me, it happens here all the time.
