You are correct, it's the reproducible experiences that are of interest in an empirical investigation. Everyone knows that and tries to do a reasonable job of controlling variables while optimizing S/N. Naturally the larger the variations the easier they are to detect but ironically some behaviors that are subtle on a quick listen turn out to be significant in the long-haul. In other words, I don't think there is a very reliable correlation between ease of detection and importance to long term satisfaction.
In general I regard the majority of results that I read as valid within the scope of their test. That is for a given listener(s) and system. I believe validity suffers when an attempt is made to try and project that very far, like to my system and ears. To my way of thinking the only reliable way to get broader results is to determine causality at the system level. However for personal use why bother as we are looking for good sound, not necessarily a sound understanding.
