Local feedback will actually create higher order distortion as well. Look at the example in Dan's thesis: Fig 2-15. It shows the increase in higher order harmonics from lower order ones. This is a tough call, but I suspect it is why many designers still use cathode bypass caps than use the local feedback easily provided by removing them. It is also interesting that a bipolar transistor's inherent 3rd harmonic distortion can be CANCELLED by using local feedback exactly 1/2 of 1/gm of the device at idle. This turns out to be 13 ohms for a bipolar transistor operating at 1 ma. This scales with current.
