Yes Clark but they are generally referred to as musical instruments (note the word instrument here, as in a tool to make music) rather than works of art in an of themselves. They are TOOLS to make art much like a paint brush, paint and canvas are the tools to make visual art. The ARTIST is the one who is making the sound from the instrument in his or her own way (for better or worse).

Actually i have found a striking similarity in the very best systems I have heard: very high transparency, low coloration, even and controlled frequency response, great soundstage and relatively accurate tonality. Small differences of course exist but on the whole they are impressively good to convey lifelike sound.
The best system I have heard yet for acoustic music playback? The Apogee Grand system powered by zero feedback hybrid amps. Superb and the only one I have heard so far to get the dynamics AND the soundstage correct for medium sized classical ensembles.
