I'm really surprised that no one has brought this up for comment before this. There were a couple of threads about this over in Critic's a couple of weeks ago when the print edition came out. I finally had a chance to read it online myself as I'm not a subscriber.
I have to say I agree with most of what he's saying. But there's a few areas in which he seems to equate "audio" with "high end audio". For example, the quote:
"Since the only measure of sound quality is that the listener likes it, that has pretty well put an end to audio advancement..."
I think there has been audio advancement, but my view is that the "high end" contribution is becoming less and less as a fraction of the total advancement as time goes on. For example, we've seen stuff like loudspeaker measurement using MLS techniques. Advancement? Yes. Contributed by the "high end"? No. There's been a huge improvement in A/D and D/A conversion since digital became dominant (despite what one or two kooks on this forum say). That's an advancement, but the semiconductor companies are doing it. Improved circuit performance while holding costs to a reasonable level? The "high end" is mostly out of control in this area. Hype is triumphing over substance at the high end. But pro audio is coming on strong. In the sub-$1000 DAC area, the Benchmark and Lavry are very popular - both pro audio products.
I wish he had left out this part, though:
"I was done in by time, history, and the most spoiled, destructive generation of irresponsible brats the world has ever seen. (I refer, of course, to the Boomers.)"
This kind of generalization, indeed slur, directed at groups of people is the foundation of all sorts of really evil stuff - racism, anti-Semitism, etc. and has no place in any publication that wishes to be taken seriously. Hopefully he'll refrain from this sort of stuff in future articles. Otherwise, he risks losing his credibility. And speaking of future articles, I see there was a footnote saying this:
"Gordon is writing an article expanding on these thoughts, for publication in the New Year."
I think that Stereophile is doing a good thing by publishing viewpoints that are different from the usual industry backslapping.
