I have two computers. Both have identical data disks (which I keep in sync through periodic mirroring) and run identical software. The newer PC is in my home office while the older PC is in my living room, but they can be used interchangeably in case one fails. I've upgraded both computer's memory and hard disks to make this possible.

Linux is easy to try out (even alongside Windows in a dual-boot configuration). See my article below. Good luck!
