> I’m afraid tagging classical is and will remain by and large a RSI job.I agree. However, with the right ripping and tagging tools and some skills in using them, it is a reasonable task.
I have about 20,000 files of classical music. If the Composer, work name, artist(s) and movement name were in the file names on somewhere in existing tags, I think I could do much of the job with the sort, search and select tools in J. River Media Center.
I think that I could fill out the Composer tag for 80-90 % of those files in 1-2 hours. Once I had the composer tags filled out, I could get maybe 60 % of the work names into the album tag (or some other tag) in 4 hours of work. I'd guess that getting the correct performer info in the artist tag for 60 % of the files might take 2-3 hours.
Cleaning up the rest would be more of a manual process but I don't think it would take forever.
I tried a few quick experiments to verify my experiments. My estimates seem reasonable. I use methods like this when I add a new tag to my existing collection.

On the other hand, it is better to get the tags right when you rip your CDs.I knew how I wanted computer based playback to work when I started. I didn't want to settle for the Genre/Artist/Album/Track Name set of tags that most player software supported. I wanted to use screen real estate efficiently so I knew what information I wanted in each tag.
I looked for player software that would let me use tags the way I wanted to. I was also acquiring skills in using those tools. By the time I was ready to start ripping my collection for real, I had an effective work flow worked out. I got the basic tags right before I started ripping each CD. The files had accurate folder/file names and accurate tags from the start.
My methods have evolved in the 5 years since I started but I didn't make any fatal mistakes.
I'd recommend the approach of tagging your files as you rip the CDs to anyone starting out.
