I think you're misunderstanding my original point. I have no objection to the idea of buying downloadable audio files, but only if there's something I want to buy. My comment is based on the catalog as it stands today. If it improves in future then maybe I will become a customer.
Sure, there are many "not so obscure" artists, even in the hirez section. But I already own those titles on SACD, not about to buy them again.
Re ripping CDs, I have already ripped my entire CD collection (over 40,000 songs). Yes, it was a lot of work, but I've already done it - no need to pay HDtracks to do it for me. Don't care about liner notes - I get much more information surfing the web (and often, if the liner notes are interesting enough, someone has published them online).
As for buying new, these days I tend to buy CDs second hand or on sale - at a fraction of retail. I'm not into the latest Top 10, so happy to pick whatever I can from the bargain bin or from a thrift store. The Top 10 hit of today is the clearance special of tomorrow, good things come to those who wait.
