I tend to buy at thrift stores, record bazaars etc. It's amazing what can be discovered at the most unlikely places. For example, I picked up 2 out of 4 of Solti's historical recording of Wagner's Ring at $5 per set - Die Walkure (the last of the operas to be recorded) is absolutely jawdropping marvellous on LP.Also, a mint copy of Ennio Morricone's The Mission - on LP, it sounds even better than the SACD (probably due to the deterioration in master tape over the years).
I also like collecting recordings of music that I enjoyed as a child. For example, Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass. I used to remember the school bus driver had an 8-track which he used to play all time, along with Los Indios Tabarajas, and as a schoolchild I used to love listening to the music.
PS - If your wife likes the Laputa sample, I can probably burn a CD's worth of similar music from the same pianist (Hee Foo) and the same composer (Joe Hisaishi). I could render it as 24-bit, but the original sample rate of the recording is 44.1kHz (my preferred sample rate for recording, for various reasons I prefer to use this rather than a higher rate).
