Did you ensure that any hard drive was fully spun down while auditioning the network version?
cPlay may not do actual I/O while the music is playing but it periodically reloads memory, which requires that a drive be spun up. Network plaback would avoid this, but if the O/S were on a hard drive then the rust might still have to spin, which would negate one of the benefits of the network configuration.
