If he persists he will eventually reach a point where he realizes that he has to educate himself. If he makes it to that point, he will be much more motivated to learn what he needs to know than he appears to be at present. At that point he will either crack the requisite books or if he is a world class math genius he might figure the theory out on his own. Of course, if he lacks the necessary persistence, he will quit.
I don't think this is a problem that can be solved by "cut and try". Indeed, it is very hard to even articulate the problem clearly, let alone to solve it.
