"...did this study conduct controlled listening tests?"
The study consisted of listening tests of square waves which were compared to degraded versions of square waves, in order to ascertain the amount of degradation that could be perceived. The degradation was done in terms of time resolution, and an amount equivalent to about 5 microseconds could just be perceived, including by one of the test subjects who was 96 years old! By contrast, the time between two samples on a CD is 22.7 microseconds. One concludes therefore that there are sounds that the ear can resolve that can not be resolved on a CD. (They are on the borderline of what can be resolved at sample rate of 192 kHz and can easily be resolved on SACD.)
The test setup used all analog equipment. The explanation given was that available digital audio equipment did not have the required resolution to do the best possible experiment. The author is a physicist and follows a long tradition of experimenters building custom experimental equipment. The simple setup he used was an essential part of his work, as it made it much easier to calibrate his apparatus and verify that it operated as intended.
