I would have to agree. I recently upgraded my computer music setup by doing many cMP tweaks to my XP box and adding the Asus Essence STX card (love it - massive improvement over the M-Audio 2496). I have the free hi res samples from Kent Poon and if I play three version of Freddie, I am shocked at how similar they sound - how great 44.1k sounds now. I hear only the slightest bit more separation of the instruments, but it's damn SUBTLE. I have a decent system - VR-1 speakers, Arcam A90 amp, Acoustic Zen Matrix ICs / Satori speaker cables / Tsunami power cable.
My basic theory now is that playback of higher res music has inherently less jitter and timing errors in absolute terms. And that's primarily why it sounds better on the average high-jitter playback system. It's NOT having more samples to work with.
