RE: Logitech Z-2300 THX 2.1 computer speaker system

PAINTING: "A Visiting Bishop"

4Season,

Out of the box, I was ready to toss the Logitech Z-2300 system in the bin- and conversely to you, I thought the subwoofer was the main idiocy- it had no discernible pitch or timbre- and was completely un-integrated became noticeable sporadically- a sudden muddy boom against a background of mud with a sky of mud reflecting on a muddy pond. The satellites were immediately so much better than my 1998 Harmon Kardons- $20 extra with my Dell P750- that the Logitechs seemed nearly alright.

As disappointed- no, actually put me in a rage!- as I was with my $140 purchase- ($115 plus $25 shipping Amazon) I decided to give them a reasonable run before tossing and I burned them in for 3 days on a diet of streaming BBC3.

What a difference 3 days makes! The subwoofer has a pitch and is much better integrated. It helped substantially to elevate the subwoofer until it is just a couple of inches from the underside of the desktop- I use these 4' long open tables as desks- and they are set about as far back as the satellites. The satellites I thought too became a bit more dynamic after the break-in, but they do sometimes have the sound of something hollow and made of light plastic. Sometimes they sound quite good. The main improvement this system offers has been that the placement of the satellites is optimal while sitting at the computer as compared to the old days of a high end component system with the speakers behind or 180 degrees opposed.

Oddly, the CD/DVD player (NEC 3230A)in the computer (Dell 3 Ghz, 2004) pooped this morning- the first time one of these has failed for me. I'd been running it almost continuously recently as a CD player and I think it objected to working for a living full time!

I'd thought of keeping the subwoofer and amplifier/controls and changing the satellites too and only today lost an auction for B&W LM-1's. What did you end up using for satellites? Did you use the original connections? Also, can you explain a bit more about damping the sub with "dacron wool"? -That's material I haven't come across.

Cheers,

Bambi B
