RE: SSD sounds better because

I don't think so, I can't see where processing could have an impact here. But I'm certainly not an expert in that area. And, hard drives have always been significant sources of EMI, which can result in noise if not adequately shielded against.

I've been pleasantly surprised at what EMI reduction has done for simple parts of my computer audio setup. When I first started with computer audio, like many people I was using a really cheap 3.5mm (ie., mini) non-shielded cable from the computer to powered speakers. A change to a $10 shielded cable made a large improvement in audio quality -- likely by shielding against EMI from the laptop.
