Impact on copyright from Australian perspective

I did some research yesterday because I was wondering why no one in Australia is offering a comparable service.

It turns out it is illegal (according the the information in www.copyright.org.au).

Basically, format shifting something you own (ie. ripping a CD onto a file) is considered legal in the Copyright Amendment Act 2006, but only if you do the ripping yourself.

It is technically illegal to ask someone to do the ripping on your behalf, because then the person doing the ripping is not the legal owner, and furthermore it is illegal to distribute digital copies.

If anyone is unsure, I suggest they seek professional legal advice rather than rely on my interpretation of the Act.
