That is fine. XP fits easily on current PC hardware.

> Not dedicated to music. I can see it in my future though.

I play music mostly on a dedicated music PC now but I've been using my personal PC as well. I never get pops and glitches on the Music PC. I get a small one every few weeks on my non-dedicated PC.

If you have a dual core desktop PC running XP with 1 GB or more of RAM, playing music should be fine on your non-dedicated PC.

Obsess about a dedicated PC later.

> Which player s/w? Not sure. Would have to play around some.

I would do that before I spent a lot of money on a soundcard or a DAC. My definition is the "lot of money" threshold is around $ 200. Yours may be different.

Many of the regular posters on this forum see computer audio as just another tweak for better sound. Most of the wider audience for computer based audio appreciates the new functionality it brings. There are hundreds of Windows based players offering different looks and different features.

> Which driver interface? Really don't know...must research.

An excellent reason to avoid spending lots of money on a fancy SPDIF-connected DAC or a USB DAC now.

WaveRT and WASAPI are Vista interfaces. Waveout/MME and DirectSound will be possible with any soundcard and any player s/w. Not all players can use the ASIO driver interface. Some can with a plug-in. Given a choice, choose a player that doesn't require plug-ins to accomplish what you want.

You have a start on your own base of knowledge with onboard sound. Stepping up to a Juli@ would let you calibrate how important that difference is to you.
