I think Toddd is saying that M-Audio and Creative also offer products that are USB input with headphone amps. Therefore what makes the Bithead a better choice? In any case a Bithead goes for $200, twice the budget mentioned in the original post.

I agree with ThomasPf's recommendation for Echo Indigo, if you have a PCMCIA slot available. It has good sound and is actually more portable and convenient than a USB box hanging off the laptop. The original playback-only Indigo is available for under $100. That model is now discontinued but some dealers still have stock. The current models of Indigo include extra input or output channels and cost significantly more.
