Not only has processing power been growing exponentially, but algorithms have been getting more clever (for decades!).

Sorry, but I find that funny especially as both a music lover and IT professional/programmer. Just listen to the realism of those algorithms! What are we "calculating"?

I'll just take largely what the microphones report for the classical world. Been there. Know what they can do.

...I know of have raved about the new Dolby Atmos remasters of Wagner's Ring Cycle, conducted by Georg Solti.

I don't have any doubt that newly crafted remastering of two channel content can yield a better product. Doesn't take a Cray supercomputer to do either. ;)
