I agree that Dolby Atmos though ear buds or headphones. . .

. . . certainly ain't where it's at.

OTOH, I have a discrete 5.1.4 set up (i.e., ten speakers, six amplifiers), and, for me, discrete Dolby Atmos immersive is a whole new world of realism in my (classical) listening experience, even though the streaming resolution on Apple Music is lossy (yes, lossy!) 24/48. I would much rather have the spatial replication improved to the astounding degree which Dolby Atmos makes possible than try to eke out some additional resolution from analog recordings from back in the 60's which are already well within the limits of 24/96 PCM.

And finally, I DISagree with your assertion that "immersive audio" that is entirely *derived* from stereo content is like every other phase/channel difference trick scheme that's been around for decades. Hardly. Not only has processing power been growing exponentially, but algorithms have been getting more clever (for decades!). Moreover, multi-microphoning has been going on for so long that these discrete channels, which fed into the 2Ch masters, now allow for plenty of possibilities for new, improved mixes which were simply not possible when we were confined to stereo.

For example, almost all the web critics and print critics I know of have raved about the new Dolby Atmos remasters of Wagner's Ring Cycle, conducted by Georg Solti. They say that the current Dolby Atmos incarnation is absolutely the best these recordings have ever sounded - really unparalleled sound quality. And this is a series of recordings from the late 50's and early 60's!

Siegfried - part of the latest remastered Solti Ring Cycle from the 60's. Even on the SACD shown here (with "only" five channels),
it blows away its previous incarnations. Dolby Atmos takes it to the next level.
