Had an unused Inovato Quadra ($35) sitting around along with an unused Schiit Fulla DAC/preamp/headphone amp ($109) and decided to do a bit of experimenting.
I added the software for the Logitech Media Server (LMS) to the Quadra along with the Squeezelite player, and then configured it to use the Fulla. The result? With just a bit of twiddling, I ended up with a small, self-contained $150 desktop set that will power a set of headphones, powered speakers or serve as a digital player for an existing stereo. Since LMS supports Qobuz, Spotify, Tidal and other online streaming services, you don't even need your own digital library, though the setup would also support that.
It's always fun to find you can get good sound without breaking the bank.
