If you have a 14TB backup, it would seem that SSDs won't work for you. The maximum now is 2TB for SSDs that I've seen. In a 6 disk RAID, you'd get roughly a bit less than 10TB with 6 2TB SSDs. For the same price, you can get 8TB Western Digital Red NAS drives and nearly 40TB of RAID storage.
I just put my ear to my 8 drive QNAP and don't hear the drives at all, just some fan noise that isn't much. Put the NAS in a closet and run an ethernet cable to you PC and you won't hear a thing.
