I've tried an RPi3 LMS server with a USB drive and it worked quite well. However, it took forever to scan the initial library, far longer than my I7 PC with a fast SATA drive.
Using a SSD would make a big difference, but I wonder how long update scans take for new additions. Mine take under a minute for 33,425 tracks.
