thanks Abe... I am going to use the mac mini as a server and the rasp pi 4 as the client... so usb to my dac will be from the pi... I gave some thought to another Pi 4 as a server but the mac will work for that....
it frustrated me with the outdated mac mini connection to thunderbolt...
the ext ssd drive can be used in the mini with usb so I have both internal and external ssd drives... as for now the internal drive will be the main and the external a backup.. I should have put a 2nd internal drive in the mini when I had it apart to put the ssd several years ago..
also I am on Yosemite 10.10.5 and LMS 8.0.. mid 2011 mini can go to high Sierra 10.13.6 but I don't see the need to mess with stuff as it all works great now...
