mac mini (mid 2011) vs raspberry pi 4

looking for some thoughts from people who have already gone down this rabbit hole...

currently using:
mac mini (2011) has an int ssd drive and music files are on that (no ext drive)... running lms on the mac to a squeezebox touch and digital out to dac... I use squeezepad and ipeng for control... everything works just fine...

setting up a raspberry pi 4 client to eliminate the touch and use usb to my dac... then I thought I would get an ext ssd (samsung t7) for the mac and move music off the internal drive... to buy the adapters/ cables to use the mac thunderbolt 2 is more $ then buying a second raspberry pi to be the server... I could use the mac usb but that is a waste with the ext ssd drive... or no ?

with my music files on the mac internal ssd drive is there significant improvement to using an ext ssd drive ?... as I indicated all works well now... mac is used for music only...

thanks in advance for any ideas
