At this stage of PC audio development, it is indeed sad that you have locked yourself with spdif which is like NTSC (you never get the same colour twice).
spdif is clock sensitive, cable sensitive, very input impedance sensitive (connectors), circuit board trace and input output transformer sensitive, and limited in bandwidth. So it is pot luck what kind of sound you get.
Your post implies that you probably have not set up the usb interface properly. Any comparison also depends on how you have set the the player software, and what output mode has been used.
