RE: Setting up a Mac mini as a music server, and other digital music questions

" thought I'd ask the Audiogon community "

Er, we are not the Audiogon community. This is Audio Asylum.
As you seem to be a novice in the area of computer audio, when I was starting out myself I found the resource that I have linked to explain all of the basics very well. Worth your time just settling down and reading through it.

The best streaming service IMO is Qobuz but some prefer Tidal. Both have a free period to try them so once you are set up I suggest installing both services' desktop apps (not the browser versions) and signing up to the free trial periods. Then see which you prefer.

You don't say if your music files already exist or if, as well as downloads, you also want to rip your CDs to computer storage. That is also covered in the linked resource but we will be happy to offer you more detailed help if you need it. You will also need a media player app installed on your Mac for playing your local files. Many appear to like Audirvana for this.

You may also like to investigate Roon ( Google: Roon Labs).
