Good to know

I thought Seagate was the only company doing this, and only in their consumer high capacity drives. I guess I haven't been paying attention to what's been happening in storage for the last year. Current gen SMR is something I do not want.

I'm still a year or two away from needing to increase storage space - unless I decide to start ripping Blu-Rays. I have a feeling the whole industry might go SMR for their consumer-level NAS drives, leaving us to pay the "Enterprise" price premium in order to not go backward in performance.
